My first published piece on Medium.com is now live. This article is about reclaiming African American and Native American environmental relationships. I share frameworks for Black and Native solidarities, some of the complexities around my family history as Black homesteaders in Oklahoma, and a few examples of BIPOC land-based educational programs.

After producing a zine on Black Water Ecologies in spring 2021, this year I followed up with a booklet of poetry. The poems explore Black life and Water at sites such as memory, ceremony, queerness, resistance, oppression, and freedom. The booklet is published in SPARK, an online zine featuring writing from grad students of color.

Take a virtual visit through the Gullah/Geechee story of historic St. Helena Island, South Carolina. This StoryMap was created through a collaboration of Queen Quet, Chieftess and Head of State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Dr. Kate Derickson, co-Director of the CREATE Initiative, and students in their co-taught geography class in fall 2020 as well as students in the CREATE Initiative. In the words of Queen Quet: “The essence of the Gullah/Geechee legacy that we continue to fight to hold onto is captured within every layer of this story map.”

I published an online zine! Wow, way harder than I even knew it would be. Lots of fun too. Grateful to the professor who assigned this as a final class project instead of a paper ;)
